The Andromeda Galaxy, M31, seen in infrared and ultraviolet light

Everything we are began inside a star.

A story in five acts, from Andromeda to Luxembourg.

Act I · Andromeda's Silent Farewell

2.5 million light-years away, in the quietest corner of the night, a giant nears the last stop of a journey it has kept for billions of years.

In neighbouring Andromeda a trillion stars go on with their dance of light, while this proud giant — many times heavier than the Sun — is about to spend the last light, the last warmth in its heart.

The vast nuclear furnace that forged the heaviest elements in its chest all its life is slowly going out. And when fusion stops, nothing is left to hold up that immense mass: the star slips, under the weight of its own grandeur, into an inevitable fate.

Act II · The Gift of a Breaking Heart

This is not a vanishing. It is the most generous inheritance ever left to space.

When the core collapses in the briefest sliver of a second, a merciless blast tears through that vast body. In a single moment the star opens its chest and scatters everything inside it. That few-second supernova cry hurls into the dark all the light and energy the Sun could give in ten billion years.

In that impossible heat, the rarest elements are forged — the ones ordinary time could never bear. And a relentless shock wave flings this cosmic wealth into the depths of space at thousands of kilometres a second.

Act III · The Ashes That Made Us

We are, quite literally, the sky wearing the shape of earth.

The storm that heart scattered into space drifted through the dark for millions of years. It crossed distances, pierced time, and never got lost; it simply waited until its hour came to become us.

The calcium that gives our bones their stance, the iron that carries life through our veins, the first carbon that binds us to existence: not one of those atoms was born in the ground beneath our feet. They are all ash flung from a giant that opened its chest to the universe ages before us.

CCarbonThe first stitch binding us to each other and to life
OOxygenThe first and last breath, setting the rhythm of being
NNitrogenThe memory of time and matter
FeIronThe resistance in our veins, the strength within
CaCalciumThe unshakeable support that keeps us standing
MgMagnesiumThe first motion, the momentum that starts life
SiSiliconThe mind and the tool that shape a world

It exploded, its ashes were scattered; those ashes gathered, and in the end became a human being, a conscience, a mind.

Act IV · Seeds Falling into the Night

Nothing in the universe is wasted. A light going out in one place gathers to brighten another darkness.

1,350 light-years from here, in the hazy corner called Orion's Sword, the gas and dust left by past explosions come together again. Gravity presses them, heats them, thickens them; and in the heart of the dark, hundreds of new stars open their eyes at once.

In each of their hearts turns the inheritance of an ancestor that burned and died long before them. So it is with people: as new Suns are born from a star's ashes, the hopes that will light tomorrow sprout from what humanity has gathered and from its conscience.

The end of one star is the raw material and the source of life for the next.

Act V · A Will Rising from the Ashes

One star dies, hundreds of new Suns are born.

The first spark that burst in the depths of Andromeda crosses light-years and ages to catch fire again today in a human conscience. Inspired by that endless cosmic cycle, NOVA brings together under one roof three human currents growing beneath the same sky.

The emblem

Four symbols, one idea.

The hands
They do not take, they carry. Nothing held here belongs to the one holding it.
The laurel wreath
The recognition owed to those who give their time and ask for nothing.
The leaves
What grows when it is cared for. Patient growth, not the immediate result.
The bridge
The Pont Adolphe, at the heart of the city: to link two banks is to link two people.
